LOCATION - CLEVELAND
A suburb of Redland City.
Set in the heart of
south of south-east Queensland, the Redland City is one of Australia's unique
regional coastal areas. Redlands is rich in history - both Aboriginal and
early European.
Aboriginals of the
Quandamooka region have lived around Moreton Bay and what is now the Redlands
for tens of thousands of years. They survived with nature's bounty from both
the ocean and the land and continue to maintain a strong influence in the
region, particularly playing a significant role in the North Stradbroke
Island community.
Following the visits
of Captain Cook in 1770 and explorer Matthew Flinders, European settlement began
in the mid 1800's with Cleveland Point selected as a port site in 1850. The
area's rich red soil led to it being quickly developed for agriculture and
horticulture including the state's first commercial sugar cane and cotton
crops. By the middle of last century the Redlands had become the "salad bowl"
for Brisbane.
Today the nation's
rapidly expanding third largest city, Brisbane is just 30 kilometres north-west
of the Redlands with the neighbouring Gold Coast to the south and Logan City to
the south-west.
Redland City area covers
539 square kilometres with a population of 120,000 and includes the sub-tropical
islands of North Stradbroke, Coochiemudlo, Karragarra, Lamb, Russell and Macleay
with more than 30 kilometres of Moreton Bay marine park coastlines.
